“Sometimes the best travel companion you can have is yourself."
In recent years, the number of people travelling alone has increased significantly. The travel industry is coming up with lots of innovative ways to cater to this growing segment. If you’ve ever wanted to travel alone but been too afraid now’s the time to reconsider. Here are our reasons why;
IT MAKES TRIP PLANNING EASIER
Do you have a bucket list of all the wonderful places you would love to see and experience? How many have you actually visited? Don’t hold yourself back just because you don’t have a travel companion.
We all have busy lives, different interests and different budgets, waiting for your friend to join you might not work out. When you travel alone, only your needs matter, and you can plan something at the last minute if you want to. I'm not suggesting you go on every vacation alone, but it would be a shame to miss out on opportunities just because they would mean going solo.
YOU'LL GET TO ENJOY "ME TIME"
Solo travel offers the time and space that’s necessary for valuable alone time. Being alone will give you the opportunity to reflect on life and enjoy your own company. You’ll learn a lot about yourself.
It’s common for solo travellers to discover new hobbies and interests whilst travelling, many also say that they interact with strangers in a different way to when they are at home. Lots also use the time to set goals for their future and work out what direction they want to steer their life in.
YOU CONTROL YOUR ITINERARY
If you’ve ever planned a vacation with another person or a group of people, you know that picking the dates alone can be a hassle, and that’s just the beginning. Where will you stay? What will you eat? Who’s planning the itinerary? Is everyone on board with this plan?
Group trips are all about compromise and negotiation, this can be great but sometimes you just need and want to do your own thing.
When travelling alone you can sleep as little or as much as you want, eat what your heart desires, and indulge yourself with whatever makes you happy.
STICK TO YOUR BUDGET
Money is always a pressure point when it comes to travel. It’s much easier to figure out your own budget and stick to it than it is to accommodate the habits and attitudes of your travel companions. You may spend differently from one trip to another, as you will prioritize what is the most important element of that trip.
IT WILL BOOST YOUR CONFIDENCE
It’s common to feel nervous when setting off on your next adventure. But the more often you do it the more confident you will become. It can also really help you once you’re back home, nothing makes you feel more confident or capable than conquering the world on your own.
Whenever one of life’s little challenges emerge, you can simply remind yourself of all that you've handled on your own all over the world—it’ll put your problems in perspective.
YOU'LL MAKE NEW FRIENDS
The fear of feeling lonely is a big deterrent to solo travellers. However, with the right planning and choices, you can avoid ever feeling lonely when travelling solo.
For example, find restaurants where you can dine at the bar and interact with the bartender or s stick to street food or groceries (if it’s in a country with good sanitation).
Research lively cafes or bars that appeal to your tastes; if you’re in a foreign country, try to find spots that are popular with expats. Sign up for cooking classes or museum tours to meet people with similar interests. Being a solo traveller automatically makes you an interesting person with a story to tell anyone you meet, so make the most of it.
YOU WILL BECOME A BETTER OBSERVER
Travelling alone makes you a better observer of people and places around you. This can help you to become more compassionate and a better person overall. You may find yourself becoming kinder and more patient, it's also common to become more curious.
YOUR EXPERIENCES WILL BE MORE MEANINGFUL
The experiences you have when travelling alone tend to feel more profound, and those memories tend to last longer.
So, are you ready to start the most invigorating journey of your life? Do we have you convinced? Are you ready to see the countries you've been dreaming of, lie on those white sands listening to songs you choose sipping your favourite cocktail?
Climbing that mountain, abseiling through a waterfall, with no one telling you it can't be done or it's not possible. Are you ready to make these things happen? Are you ready to come back with a million stories, to be the most interesting person at the dinner party? To give the most amazing gifts that you just happened to pick up in a little bazaar in wherever or whilst volunteering with impoverished women in India. All of these opportunities lie before you, which one will you take?
