How to Get Out of a Funk

There are days when things just feel too hard and you just want to stay in bed or binge watch YouTube videos all day.

This funk is known by many names, rut, the spinning of wheels, stuck, but they all mean one thing, you’ve given in to resistance and negative self-talk.

You’ve succumbed to some thought that you may or may not even remember and now you feel depleted and unmotivated to move forward.

Even in times of a funk, we’ll have positive motivational thoughts that try to spark us to move.

An idea is dropped into our mind and for a few seconds we feel alive, we feel a surge of energy to do it.

But that motivation only lasts all of 5 seconds and if you don’t get up and do that thing, it will be gone very quickly.

Your brain will only give you a 5-second window to start a task before it plays resistant thoughts in your brain.

“I don’t feel like it”, “maybe tomorrow”, “I’m too tired”, “I can’t today, I’m busy” etc.

I heard Mel Robbins talk about this one day on an episode of Impact Theory titled “Why Motivation is Garbage”.

Listening to Mel speak about this I heard sirens going off in my head, I knew exactly what she was talking about.

I experience this so many times in my own life but didn’t equate it to mean everyone suffers from it too.

When inspiration strikes just do it. Don’t think about anything except the task at hand.

Don’t give resistance an opportunity to talk you out of it because it will try too.

Your life choices are made up of the decisions you didn’t make.
